On the 8th of October 1995, Uganda adopted the current Constitution as the supreme law of the land. Accordingly, article 1(1) and the National Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy provide that it is the duty of every citizen to acquaint himself or herself with the provisions of the Constitution in order to uphold and defend it.
Unfortunately, not many Ugandans can read and comprehend English, the language in which the Constitution is written. Uganda Law reform Commission, has over the years translated the Constitution in different languages in order to promote public awareness and enhance usability of the Constitution as well as improve access to justice in Uganda.
The state has the responsibility to promote public awareness of the Constitution. Article 4(a) of the Constitution requires the state to promote public awareness through translating it into Ugandan languages and disseminating it as widely as possible.
The Commission has to date translated the Constitution of Uganda in the various local languages: Luganda, Ateso, Runyakore-Rukiga, Dhu Alur, Lusoga, Lumasaba, Lukhonzo, Kiswahili, Leb Lango, Lufumbira, Leb Acholi, Dhu’ Adhola, Nga’Karimajong, Madi-Ti, Aringa – Ti, and Lugwere. Copies of the translated versions can be obtained at the Commission offices on Workers House, 8th Floor.
